THE PROP TEST
A Wednesday field guide: my 5-second test for telling a real place from a backdrop — before you waste a Saturday and $14 on a "concept" latte.
Real talk, Wednesday edition.
Monday I’m publishing a DISPATCH I’ve been chewing on for weeks — about what’s happening to Mexico City as it gets quietly turned into a backdrop for everyone’s content. (Phase 4. You’ll see.) But the question I keep getting whenever I rant about this out loud is always the same: okay Amy, but HOW do you know? How do you tell a real place from set dressing before you’ve already sat down and ordered?
So here’s the field guide.
I call it THE PROP TEST. Five checks, takes about five seconds, never wrong.
1 — THE MENU TEST
Laminated, a little sticky, basically unchanged since 2019? Real. A single thin card with eight items, three of them “house-made” something and one of them just the word toast? You’re standing inside a mood board.
2 — THE WHO’S-ACTUALLY-HERE TEST
Look around. Is it the people who LIVE here — the abuela, the guy on his lunch break, the regulars the staff greet by name? Or is everyone, you included, holding a phone up at the wall? If the room is mostly photographing the room, it’s a prop.
3 — THE DECADES TEST
Ask how long they’ve been open. “Since ‘76” — green flag forever. “We opened in March” — could go either way… but if March’s entire personality is Edison bulbs and a neon sign in cursive, you already have your answer.
4 — THE SIGNAGE TEST

Real places tell you what they are in big honest letters. Props whisper it in lowercase sans-serif — or don’t tell you at all, because the unmarked door IS the brand. If finding the entrance is a “puzzle,” congratulations, you found the backdrop.
5 — THE CORTADO TEST
You know the one. If the coffee costs more than the torta, the bus, AND the haircut next door combined, the price isn’t paying for the coffee. It’s paying for the set.
A real place doesn’t need you to photograph it to stay open. A prop does.
So — what’s the most un-prop’d spot you love? The cantina, the fonda, the panadería that has never once trended. Drop it in the comments — I’m building a Maps list of the city that’s still itself, and the best ones are going in. (That list lands for paid subscribers soon. Monday, the full dispatch. Subscribe so you don’t miss either.)
